Descriptive Note Text

This postcard offers a vivid visual record of the Pavilion of Hungary, distinguished by its striking chromatic palette, which encompassed shades of red ochre, green, yellow, and blue. These vibrant tones stood in marked contrast to the prevailing aesthetic of the exposition, where many structures adhered to the restrained whiteness characteristic of the Turinese baroque revival style. The Hungarian pavilion’s polychromy was not merely decorative but culturally significant: it drew directly upon vernacular artistic traditions and the revival of folk motifs that informed Hungarian arts and crafts in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In this sense, the building’s coloration functioned as a deliberate assertion of national identity, aligning with broader movements in Central Europe that sought to valorize indigenous forms and resist homogenizing cosmopolitan aesthetics within the international exposition context.
