Descriptive Note Text

This postcard, commemorating Móric Pogány and Emil Töry—the architects of the Hungarian Pavilion—mobilizes a distinctly vernacular visual language grounded in Hungarian folklore, rural artisanal traditions, and evocations of an Eastern cultural heritage. It depicts a stylized shepherd tending his flock at a watering site, a motif that foregrounds pastoral life as a marker of national identity. The composition’s vibrant chromatic scheme—featuring deep blues, saturated orange-reds, and luminous yellows—aligns with the aesthetic principles of Hungarian Art Nouveau, which drew extensively on natural forms and indigenous craft traditions.
