Descriptive Note Text

This postcard shows the Club Alpino Italiano’s exhibit at the 1911 Turin Exposition, a staged Alpine hamlet: rather than a conventional pavilion, it recreates vernacular mountain architecture at full scale. Three buildings are clustered together against a backdrop of tall conifers. The left foreground features a log granary built of squared timbers laid horizontally, with a low-pitched shingled roof. It sits raised above the ground like Alpine rascards or raccards from the Aosta Valley and Valais, lifted on supports to protect stored grain from damp and rodents. In the center background, a small stone chapel with a slender bell tower topped by a steep, pointed spire gives the ensemble a village feel. On the right, a large three-story stone house with rough masonry walls, small white-framed windows, and long wooden balconies running across two upper floors on timber posts. A small sign and a house number are mounted near the doorway.

The postcard was mailed to Villafranca d'Asti, a small town in the Piedmont region of Italy.
