Descriptive Note Text

This is a postcard of the Pavilion of Musical Instruments (Padiglione degli Istrumenti Musicali) at the 1911 Turin International Exposition. The building is shown in a three-quarter view from the left. The façade is in the Neo-Baroque style that dominated the 1911 exposition. A semicircular columned portico projects from the main entrance and carries a balustraded balcony. Above it is a large arched window framed by a sculpted cartouche. The roofline is crowded with ornament: an allegorical sculptural group crowns the central bay, and balustrades, urns, and finials run along the cornice. The right-hand wing rises to an elaborate scrolled pediment with a crest. Colossal pilasters and paired columns divide tall, gridded windows, and decorative urns stand in niches between the bays on the right.
