Descriptive Note Text

This sepia-toned postcard shows the Palazzo delle Feste at the 1911 Turin International Exposition. The printed caption at the bottom reads “Esposizione Internazionale di Torino 1911 – Palazzo delle feste ove fu inaugurata l’Esposizione,” identifying it as the hall where the Exposition was officially inaugurated.

The building is shown at an angle from the left, so the facade recedes toward the right. It is an eclectic Baroque-revival design typical of the fair’s architecture: paired Corinthian columns on tall pedestals, heavily carved capitals and cornices, and a roofline crowded with balustrades, urns, and sculptural groups, including a figure with raised arms at the far left corner. At the upper right, a large frieze with allegorical figures fills the space beneath the cornice. Along the lower level, tall arched and rectangular windows line the facade, and at the left, a semicircular, columned balcony or porch projects from it.
