Descriptive Note Text

This picture postcard shows the Grande Padiglione dei Festeggiamenti (Great Pavilion of Festivities) at the 1911 International Exposition in Turin.  The postcard reproduces a drawn view of the pavilion, printed in sepia-black and lightly hand-tinted. Soft greens appear in the trees and a pale wash covers the sky. The building is a long, ornate exhibition hall in the neo-Baroque style. A large ribbed dome rises on the right. The dome sits on a colonnaded drum with sculptural groups around its base, and it is crowned by a lantern, a small cupola, and a tall spire. Below the dome, a monumental arched portal opens into the building. The façade stretches to the left through bays of tall arched windows separated by paired columns and pilasters. Relief friezes run above the windows, statues stand in niches, and a balustrade lined with urns and finials tops the roofline. At the far left end, a projecting portal carries a pediment topped by a large sculpted eagle group. In front of the central section, a statue stands on a pedestal.

The postcard was mailed to Porto Maurizio, a historic coastal area in the Liguria region of Italy.
