Descriptive Note Text
This black-and-white photograph shows the construction status of the Pavilion of the Arts applied to Industry at the end of March 1911. The Pavilion is still under construction and is seen from across an open, unlandscaped field. The building’s central block is crowned by a tall dome on an arcaded drum, topped by a lantern, with scaffolding still wrapped around the upper dome and lantern. Below, a pedimented entrance portico with paired columns projects from the façade, and it too is partly encased in timber scaffolding. Long, lower wings with rows of tall windows and pilasters extend to either side. A continuous wooden fence runs across the middle ground, separating the worksite from the viewer.
