Descriptive Note Text

This postcard documents the construction progress on the 1911 Turin International Exposition towards the end of March 1911. The view looks along the Po River, with a broad sweep of still water filling the lower half of the image and reflecting the buildings and trees. On the left stands the Castello del Valentino. A long timber structure, possibly scaffolding or a temporary walkway, runs along the waterline below the castle.

In the middle distance, beyond a screen of trees, a cluster of pale exposition buildings rises along the bank. They include domes and a tall, sharply pointed conical tower, which was part of the Hungarian Pavilion. Several structures appear unfinished, which fits the “end of March” progress-report framing.

The right edge is filled by the close-up corner of a large, classically ornamented building with a balustraded roofline, pilasters, and the start of an arch. A sloping, unpaved embankment in the right foreground leads down to the water and still looks like a work site, with loose earth, a utility pole, and a small boxy structure near the edge.
