Descriptive Note Text
The image shows a corner of the gardens of the french section, inspired by the Petit Trianon in the gardens of Versailles. We see a curved Ionic colonnade, sweeping in a wide arc, graced by a row of slender fluted columns with scrolled (Ionic) capitals that support a balustraded parapet, punctuated at intervals by small decorative finials or urn-like ornaments along the roofline. Between the columns, the structure opens into a series of round-headed arched openings, giving it the appearance of an elegant garden "exedra" or covered walkway.
In the foreground, a large semi-elliptical or oval reflecting pool dominates the composition, edged with a low stone curb and a paved walkway.
Flanking the pool on raised stone pedestals are two sculptural fountain groups, each depicting a cherub or putto figure together with an animal (the poses suggest something like a child wrestling or riding alongside a goat or similar creature) — playful, Rococo-inspired garden statuary very much in keeping with a "Trianon" theme.
