Descriptive Note Text
This photograph documents the pavilion dedicated to Arte Decorativa Francese (French Decorative Art) at the 1911 Turin International Exposition. The pavilion presents a polygonal, single-story structure that combines angled and curved volumes, creating a dynamic, multi-faceted silhouette.
The decorative vocabulary draws on Beaux-Arts and early twentieth-century exposition eclecticism. Large urn-form sculptural finials rise from pedestals at the corners of the parapet, lending it a monumental quality despite its modest scale. A band of round-arched windows runs along the upper register separated by pilasters. Decorative roundels and cartouches are set into the upper wall surface between the window groupings.
The pavilion is set against a dense backdrop of mature trees, and a row of bistro-style metal chairs is arranged on the lawn to the left, offering evidence of the exposition's broader strategy of pairing exhibition architecture with seating areas to encourage visitors to rest and socialize in the gardens of the French section.
