Descriptive Note Text

This black-and-white postcard shows a section of the massive Pavilion of Latin America.  We see the Uruguay Pavilion, with “URUGUAY” lettered across its large arched entrance. It is a Beaux-Arts/eclectic structure with a ribbed dome topped by a lantern and sculptural finial. A monumental glazed arch, flanked by pilasters and statuary, plus a lower wing with rows of tall windows. Small groups of visitors stand on the terrace and steps leading down toward the water. A second, even more ornate pavilion has a tall central tower crowned by a flagpole, smaller cupolas, an arched central bay, and heavy Baroque-revival decoration. On the far right, a long arcaded loggia runs along the riverbank.

A crowded vaporino (passenger excursion boat) moves across the river. It is dressed with Italian tricolor flags, including what appear to be the Savoy-shield national flag at the stern. Life rings hang along the railing, and passengers fill both the covered deck and the rail.
