Descriptive Note
The son of painter Giuseppe Giani, Giovanni followed his father's footsteps and enrolled at the prestigious Accademia Albertina in Turin, Italy, where he received classical training in drawing and painting. He excelled at depicting landscape scenes as well as the human figure, evolving from a realistic approach to the stylized forms of Art Nouveau. He also worked as medalist and engraver, showed his works at the Società Promotrice di Belle Arti di Torino, and participated in numerous Biennali dell'Arte in Venice. The Italian Royal Family was among the patrons of his art. He excelled at integrating human figures into natural and domestic scenes at a time when portraiture and landscape paintings were mostly seen as separate genres.
On the occasion of the Exposition of Turin 1911, he worked with Giorgio Ceragioli and Oreste Pizio on the dioramas of the Pavilion of Fashion.
