Descriptive Note Text

This is a black-and-white photo postcard print showing the Sovereigns on their way to the Inauguration. It almost certainly shows King Victor Emmanuel III and Queen Elena’s procession on 29 April 1911, the opening day of the Esposizione Internazionale dell’Industria e del Lavoro.

A column of mounted cavalry moves from the background toward the right foreground along a street laid with tram tracks. The riders in front wear gleaming breastplates and crested, plumed helmets, the dress uniform of the Corazzieri, the royal mounted guard. Behind them, in the middle distance, are open horse-drawn carriages, with coachmen and footmen in top hats. One of these presumably carries the royal couple.

The buildings' façades are decorated for the occasion with flags and banners hung from balconies and strung on wires across the street.
