Descriptive Note Text

This black-and-white photo postcard shows the Monumental Bridge with the stairway leading up to Court of Honor and the Water Castle (also called Monumental Fountain or Monumental Waterfall).  The Water Castle was reminiscent of Victor Emmanuel II National Monument, also known as the Vittoriano or Altare della Patria. Here one can see the Water Castle's two towers, which were 80 meters high and in the middle of the structure one can see the impressive statue, placed in a large niche, symbolizing the homeland, executed as a real-scale model by sculptor Luigi Contratti.

The Monumental Bridge was flanked by tall pillars with Francesco Sassi's Winged Victories.
