Giovanni De Agostini founded the Istituto Geografico De Agostini in Rome in 1901. In 1908 the headquarters moved to Novara, Piedmont. The first works, the "Calendario Atlante De Agostini" and the first 1:250,000 scale map of Italy, were a huge success. In 1919, Marco Adolfo Boroli and Cesare Angelo Rossi took over Istituto Geografico De Agostini, retaining its name and trademark and in 1946 the Boroli family became the sole owner of the company.

During the 20th and 21st centuries, the Italian company has expanded into the sectors of publishing, communication and media, gaming and digital entertainment, and finance, among others.

In 2007 the Fondazione De Agostini was established, cementing the company’s commitment to ensuring the enduring effectiveness of its social endeavors.

In 2018 the De Agostini Group received the IMD Global Family Business Award from the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) recognizing it as the “best family business of the year worldwide.” The award is given to companies that have successfully combined family and business values by passing them from generation to generation.

Turin 1911 hosted the Padiglione dell'Instituto Geografico de Agostini, with its "Italy in Relief" exhibit.
