Descriptive Note Text
Les Français à Turin en 1911 is the official retrospective and documentation of France's massive participation in the 1911 Turin International Exposition. It was produced by the French General Commission for the exposition under the leadership of Stéphane Dervillé (the General Commissioner of the French Section). Georges Cain, a prominent French writer and curator (then-director of the Musée Carnavalet), served as the delegate for the General Commissioner and wrote the descriptive introductions for the French retrospective exhibits. Richly illustrated, the volume covers France's major cultural and industrial footprint at the World's Fair. Specific topics it details include:
The French Pavilion & Gardens.
Descriptions of French architecture, including the Pavilion of the City of Paris (built to resemble the Palace of Versailles) and the lush landscape architecture of the "valetta" gardens.
Arts & Craftsmanship: Documentation of France's display of decorative arts, luxury furniture, glassware, and porcelain, which heavily influenced Italian aesthetics at the time.
Trade and Industry: Technical reports and catalogs covering the industrial and chemical innovations France brought to the event.
The French Restaurant: Menus and overviews of the renowned Restaurant Français, which introduced visitors to premium Parisian cuisine and wines.
