Descriptive Note Text

This black-and-white photo postcard shows the  "villaggio somalo", which was located next to the amusement park in the Pilonetto area of the Exposition. The guidebooks of the time emphasized the "authenticity" of these reconstructions. They spoke about the "autentici indigeni" (actual indigenous people) who lived in the villages. These indigenous people were members of African troupes led by Western impresarios that went from exposition to exposition representing "exotic" slices of life for the entertainment of Western fairgoers, as shown in this photo postcard.
