Descriptive Note Text

This is a photographic postcard of the Padiglione degli Italiani all’Estero (Pavilion of Italians Abroad) at the 1911 Turin International Exposition. The pavilion is in an exuberant neo-Baroque style, typical of the Exposition’s eclectic official architecture. An elaborate tower rises on the left in stacked stages. It has open arcaded loggias, volutes, finials, and a slender lantern with a spire and a small figure or ornament at the tip. Smaller pinnacles cluster around its base. A large ribbed dome sits on a drum. A lantern topped by a winged figure, probably Victory or Fame, with one arm raised. The ground floor has a colonnaded portico with paired columns and a balustraded terrace above. Large arched openings and heavy cornices are richly modeled with garlands and cartouches. An ornamental wrought-iron lamp bracket projects from the building’s left edge.

A red 10-centesimi Poste Italiane stamp is affixed to the picture side at upper right. It shows the profile of King Victor Emmanuel III.

The postcard was mailed to France.
