Descriptive Note Text

This is a picture postcard of the Pavilion of England (Padiglione dell’Inghilterra) at the 1911 Turin International Exposition. The photograph is printed in a deep monochrome on a cream card stock, set within a faint embossed plate-mark border. It shows an exuberant neo-Baroque building: Two tall corner towers frame the facade, each rising in stacked tiers to an onion-like cupola topped with a crown-shaped lantern. Between them, the central bay culminates in a richly scrolled, curved pediment carrying a heraldic coat of arms flanked by sculpted figures. Balustraded terraces run across the front, and an open colonnaded loggia extends to the left.

The foreground is dominated by a monumental fountain: water spills in several sheets over rusticated, rock-like basins, surrounded by sculptural groups, including a prominent central figure and others along the balustrade, with ornate scrolled cartouches at the base. This is the Fontana dei Dodici Mesi, which was built for the 1898 exposition.

The postcard was mailed to Alessandria, a city in the Piedmont region.
