Descriptive Note Text

The basilica was built from 1717 to 1731 for Victor Amadeus II of Savoy, and designed by Filippo Juvarra. A splendid example of Turinese Baroque, the church's front protrudes from a dome structure recalling the Pantheon. The dome was completed in 1726 and resembles some elements of Michelangelo's dome at St. Peter's Basilica.

The basilica inspired many of the pavilions at the Turin 1911 fair, which in its overall design emulated Juvarra's eclectic approach to the baroque.
