Descriptive Note Text
This postcard advertises the International Classical Music Competition that was held from August 13 to August 15, 1911 on the occasion of the Exposition of Turin 1911. An allegorical representation of Italy dominates the composition: it is a crowned woman sitting on a throne, and holding a scepter in one hand and a laurel wreath in the other. Below her, we see other allegorical figures such as Peace (with the Latin motto PAX) on her chest; and the Music Muses. A male figure, representing Labor, kneels on the left side of the composition. the Taurus (Bull) of Turin is visible on the left side of the picture and the heraldic emblem of the House of Savoy (the "scudo crociato" or cross- shield) parallels it on the opposite side. The dates "1861-1911" at the top of the composition reference the fiftieth anniversary of the unification of Italy that the Exposition celebrated.
