Descriptive Note
Tullio Serafin was an Italian opera conductor, with a repertoire rich in 19th-century operas by Bellini, Rossini and Donizetti. He trained in Milan, and played viola in the Orchestra della Scala, Milan, under Arturo Toscanini, who appointed him Assistant Conductor. He replaced Toscanini as Music Director at La Scala when Toscanini went to New York. Serafin, in turn, joined the conducting staff of the Metropolitan Opera from 1924 to 1934. Maestro Serafin conducted many opera performances at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires between 1914 and 1951. He also served the artistic director of the Teatro Reale in Rome. He trained many important singers, including Joan Sutherland, Renata Tebaldi, and Maria Callas.
On the occasion of the Exposition of Turin, Tullio Serafin directed two concerts in the Pavilion of Festivals and Concerts:
May 11: the third Concerto sinfonico with soloist Carmen Toschi. Musical selections included pieces by Wolf-Ferrari, Brahms, Guido Alberto Fano, and Strauss.
May 15: the fourth Concerto sinfonico, with soloist Chiarina Fino-Savio. Musical selections includes pieces by Luigi Gatti, Giacomo Orefice, Leone Singaglia, Ottorino Respighi, Bossi and Rossini.
