Descriptive Note
Director of photography, filmmaker, and screenwriter, Roberto Omegna was a pioneer of Italian cinema.
For around 20 years he directed the succesful Ambrosio company in Turin, during the golden era of Italian cinematography, also involving D'annunzio in making a few films. Omegna traveled around the world making documentaries and recording real-life scenes, such as damages after earthquakes or life in hospitals. He created Gli ultimi giorni di Pompei (1913), a 20 minute short that is considered the first Italian silent film.
For the Turin 1911 World's Fair he shot the La città del sogno documentary showing the pavilions under construction and during the exhibition. With Nozze d'oro he won the first prize in the artisitc category of the cinematographic contest at the Turin 1911 World's Fair and with La vita delle farfalle documentary he was awardeda prize in the scientific category.
