Descriptive Note
Considered the "father of Italian cinema," Arturo Ambrosio was an Italian film producer, film maker, and director in the early years of Italian cinema. He started his career in Turin as an optician and photographer with a small business in Turin. In 1904, after trips to Germany, England and France, he began making short documentaries. In 1906 he founded the Società Anonima Ambrosio, known as Ambrosio Films.
In 1908 Ambrosio produced and directed Gli ultimi giorni di Pompei (The Last Days of Pompeii), which started thwe genre of Italian historical epics, generally set in the classical era known as Colossals or Kolossals. He also directed the films Galileo Galilei (1909) and Amleto (1914).
He produced the documentary L'Esposizione di Torino 1911.
