Descriptive Note Text

These lottery tickets, created by Edoardo Gioia, display an allegorical representation showing two female figures, embodying the cities of Turin and Rome (with the “Toro,” or Bull, for Turin, and the “Lupa,” or She-Wolf for Rome). The Italian flag is loosely wrapped around their bodies. Turin holds a small statue of Nike (Winged Victory) standing on a globe (the world). The dates 1861-1911, marking the 50th anniversary of Italy’s unification, are centered below the two figures. In the lower part of the allegorical representation, the theme of the lottery is introduced with two “putti,” or cherubs, pouring gold coins out of two amphors followed by the text: “National lottery Rome-Turin.” The allegorical representation is signed: “Edoardo Gioia”. Each lottery ticket costed 1 lira. The back of the tickets displays the rules and regulations of the lottery and the amounts of the various monetary prizes.
