Descriptive Note
Fritz Steinbach was a German conductor and composer. He studied at the Leipzig Conservatory and in Vienna. In 1886, he succeeded Richard Strauss as the conductor of the Meiningen Court Orchestra, where he remained until 1902. He then was appointed as music director of the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne, where he stayed until 1914. He also served repeatedly as the director of the Lower Rhenish Music Festival between 1904 and 1913.
Steinbach taught conducting at the Cologne Conservatory. He worked very closely with Johannes Brahms and performed music by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Mahler.
On the occasion of the Exposition of Turin 1911, Maestro Steinbach directed two concerts in the Salone delle Feste, Pavilion of Festivals and Concerts:
October 4, 1911: music by Beethoven, Brahms, and Bach.
October 6, 1911: music by Reger, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Strauss.
