Descriptive Note Text
Le Petit Journal was one of the major French dailies, published from 1863 to 1944. At the end of the nineteeth century, its circulation reached two million copies, making it the world's largest newspaper in the world. This issue advertised the airplane competition from Paris, France to Rome and Turin, Italy, in celebration of the 1911 Exposition. The cover shows two women, allegories of France and of Italy, with planes flying above them. Italy carries the shield with the Savoy Cross and France's Marianne wears the typical Phrygian red cap.
