Descriptive Note Text
Located of the lake of Zurich, 60 m. NE of Bern. First inhabited in the Neolithic period by lake dwellers, it was later occupied by the Gallic Helvetii, the Romans in 58 CE, the Alemanni and the Franks, and to the German Stem duchy of Swabia. In the 16th century, under the influence of Ulrich Zwiingli, it became the leading power of the Swiss Reformation, starting a civil war, which ended by a Roman Catholic victory at Kappel in 1531. Notable buildings include the Romanesque Grossmünster of the 11th and 13th centuries and the Fraumünster of the 12th and 15th centuries. James Joyce is buried here.
