Descriptive Note Text
Perugia is the capital city of the region of Umbria in central Italy, near the Tiber River, and the capital of the province of Perugia. The city symbol is the griffin, which can be seen in the form of plaques and statues on buildings around the city. Perugia has always been one of the most notable center for Art and education (there is one of the most ancient university of Europe). In the XV century the power of the city was concentrated in the Baglioni family but in 1540 Perugia was placed again under the direct control of the Papal State.
The papal rule continued, excepted during the French occupation and the Roman Republic, until the formation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
