Descriptive Note Text

This postcard shows a view of Piazza Castello, with Palazzo Madama, in 1911 (as demonstrated by the date handwritten on the back of the postcard). At the beginning of the first century BC, the site of Palazzo Madama was occupied by a gate in the city's Roman walls departed. Two of the towers still testify to this original part of the Palazzo (one can see one of the tower in this photograph). The section overlooking Piazza Castello was built by Filippo Juvarra between 1718 and 1721 and creates a scenographic façade a single bay deep, screening the rear part of the older building, which remained unchanged.

The facade shows a piano nobile with arched windows and high ceilings.  Above the piano nobile there is a mezzanine surmounted by a row of tall pilasters. A balustrade decorated with vases and statues in white marble surmounts the façade.

Palazzo Madama, and Juvarra's style more in general, inspired the neo-baroque architecture of Turin 1911.
