The TURIN 1911 PROJECT is the first digital project devoted to the only universal exposition ever held in Italy. Though World's fairs were among the West's largest mass-attended events, they were also ephemeral occurrences designed to exhibit, rather than preserve, the changing world of modernity. Turin 1911 was no exception. Once the Fair was dismantled, its artifacts were scattered among institutional archives and private collectors, thus failing to be studied in a systematic manner.
UC San Diego researchers from the School of Arts & Humanities and the Cultural Heritage Engineering and Initiative (CHEI) at UC San Diego collaborate with colleagues from the Laboratory of Geomatics for Cultural Heritage of the Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy (POLITO) to create a growing digital archive, including 3D video reconstructions and interactive computer models, available online to the public worldwide.
To that end, donors are invited to give directly to Turin 1911 project and to provide support for this ambitious campaign to document at the ephemeral pavilions and the events of the 1911 World’s Fair in Turin. Your investment in the Turin 1911 Project advances new methods of discovery and preservation of our global cultural heritage for future generations. All philanthropic gifts – 100% – will be directed to:
- Supporting graduate students through fellowships to work on the Turin 1911 Project.
- Creating research opportunities to do field and lab work, in both the United States and Italy, as well as hands-on experience using advanced technologies to document and study Italy’s cultural patrimony; and
- Providing flexible funding to meet the greatest needs for innovation and discovery through the collaboration of arts & humanities and cultural heritage engineering.
